Forests of Change

Change is a part of life in the forests of the North Rim, and fire is one natural process that
implements this change. Ponderosa pine forests rely on frequent, low intensity ground fires
to release nutrients into the soil and keep the forests open. Mature Ponderosa pines are
well-adapted to surface fires by having thick bark and few lower branches.

Humans have also brought change to the Ponderosa pine forests on the North Rime. For
most of the twentieth century, fire was removed from this forest type. The soil became
depleted of nutrients and the forests became overcrowded. Today, the National Park Service
is using fire as a management tool when conditions are right for ecosystem restoration.
While you are here, look clowely at the Ponderosa pine forests around you, and see if fire
has recently touched them and brought about change.
