About Plateau Point

Plateau Point is probably the most popular hiking destination at Grand Canyon National Park within the canyon itself. Making the descent from Grand Canyon Village on the Bright Angel Trail, visitors arrive at Plateau Point throughout the day.

From 1200 feet above on Plateau Point, the churning force of the Colorado River can be seen in the depths of the the Granite Gorge. The canyon walls, lined with cliffs and formations and decorated in colorful layers of stone, rise as great mountains in every direction. The rim where Grand Canyon Village lies is clearly visible 3000 above to the south.

Plateau Point lies on the Tonto Platform. A hard layer of stone at this level, deposited in an ancient sea, has resisted erosion, and forms a flatter are about two thirds of the way down on both sides of the canyon.
